How Google Decides Who to Show and Who to Ignore

When someone searches "electrician London" or "emergency plumber near me," Google returns two types of results: the local pack - a map with three business listings - and traditional organic website results. The local pack is where the action is. The top three map results capture the overwhelming majority of clicks for local service searches. If you're in the local pack, you get calls. If you're not, you're largely invisible regardless of how good your website is. Google uses three factors to rank local businesses: relevance, how well your listing matches what was searched; distance, how close your business is to the searcher; and prominence, how well-known and trusted your business appears based on reviews, links, and online activity. You cannot control distance. You can directly influence relevance and prominence - and that's where most trades businesses are leaving enormous ranking potential untouched. The businesses ranking at the top of local search in your area have not done anything magical. They have a complete, active Google Business Profile, a steady stream of recent reviews, a fast mobile-friendly website with relevant service and location pages, and consistent business information across the major directories. That's the entire formula. The gap between most trades businesses and this standard is large - and it closes faster than most people expect.

Your Google Business Profile and Review Strategy

Your Google Business Profile is the single most important factor in your local search rankings. Claim and verify it at business.google.com, then complete every field without exception: business name, phone number, website, hours, business category, services list, service areas, and a keyword-rich description of what you do and where you do it. Add at least twenty photos of real completed work. Profiles with photos receive significantly more clicks and direction requests than those without. Real before-and-after shots, your branded van, your team, your accreditations. Reviews are the single biggest lever in local SEO. Not just the total number - the recency, the velocity of new reviews arriving, and the quality of your responses all factor into your Google rankings and into every customer's decision to call you. The businesses at the top of local search have a system. After every job, within two hours of completion, they send a WhatsApp message to the customer with a direct link to their Google review page. That timing - while the customer is still pleased - produces a conversion rate of thirty to fifty percent. Do this after every job. Your review count will grow every single week. Respond to every review you receive, positive and negative. Google treats responses as an engagement signal and ranks active businesses higher. Potential customers read your responses before calling - how you handle a negative review tells them more about your professionalism than ten five-star ratings do. Respond calmly, acknowledge the customer's experience, and offer to resolve it offline. A well-handled negative review increases trust rather than eroding it.
