Your Conversion Rate Is Below 2% and You Haven't Investigated Why

The average Shopify store converts between 1.5% and 2.5% of visitors into paying customers. The top-performing stores convert at 4% or higher. If your store is below 2%, something between the landing and the purchase is not working - and the gap in revenue between 1.2% and 3% on identical traffic is not marginal. On a store receiving 5,000 monthly visitors with a £45 average order value, the difference is £3,375 per month. From the same traffic. No additional ad spend. Diagnosing the drop-off requires data, not guesswork. Install Microsoft Clarity - it's free and takes ten minutes - and watch session recordings of people who visited a product page and left without adding to cart. The pattern of where they stop scrolling, what they don't click, and where they abandon will tell you more than any dashboard metric. Set up a purchase funnel in GA4 that tracks each step from session to product view to add to cart to checkout to purchase. The step with the largest drop-off is where you start. Check your mobile conversion rate separately. Most stores find that mobile converts at half the rate of desktop, and given that the majority of traffic arrives on mobile, a broken mobile experience single-handedly explains a poor overall conversion rate. If your product pages, cart, and checkout aren't optimised for a thumb on a phone screen, you're losing the majority of your potential buyers before they get close to purchasing.

Your Product Pages Are Losing Customers You've Already Paid to Acquire

The product page is the moment of maximum intent. A customer who navigates to a product page is actively considering buying that product. Everything on that page either pushes them toward the purchase or gives them a reason to hesitate. Most Shopify product pages give customers far too many reasons to hesitate. A single product image on a white background tells a customer nothing about the product in the context of their life. Lifestyle photography - the product being used by a real person in a real environment - consistently outperforms sterile product shots on conversion rate. Social proof must be visible without scrolling. The review count and average star rating should appear immediately below the product title - before the price, before the description. It's the first trust signal a hesitant customer looks for, and burying it below a long description means most visitors never see it. Below the add-to-cart button, a small set of trust badges - free returns, secure payment, delivery timeframe, satisfaction guarantee - addresses the four objections most customers carry to every product page. Not having them is leaving easy conversion wins unrealised. The checkout itself is where the most costly friction lives. Forced account creation before purchase is one of the highest-friction mistakes a Shopify store can make. Most first-time customers don't want an account - they want the product. Guest checkout should be the primary, prominent option. Shipping costs revealed for the first time at the checkout step are the leading cause of cart abandonment. Be transparent about shipping costs from the product page onwards. Remove any surprise from the checkout, and a meaningful percentage of the customers currently abandoning at that stage will complete the purchase.
