The 90-Second Decision That's Costing You Work

When someone needs a roofer, electrician, or plumber, they pick up their phone, type something like "roofer near me" into Google, and call whoever appears at the top of the results. That entire process takes about 90 seconds. If you're not showing up in those first three map results - what Google calls the local pack - you're invisible. The customer will never know you exist. They will hire someone else. The businesses winning those calls are not necessarily better at the trade than you. They're better at one thing: their online presence. A complete Google Business Profile, 50+ recent reviews, and a website that loads quickly on a phone. That's what separates the businesses taking the calls from the ones wondering where the enquiries went. This isn't about fairness. It's about how customers find and choose a tradesperson today. And the gap between where you are and where you need to be is smaller than you think - but every week it stays open, it's costing you jobs you should be winning.

The Three Digital Gaps That Lose You Jobs

The first gap is your Google Business Profile. This is the most important piece of online real estate your business owns. Most trades businesses have either set it up badly or haven't touched it since they created it three years ago. No photos of real work. Under 10 reviews. Business hours not updated. No responses to existing reviews. When a customer is choosing between your profile and a competitor's in 90 seconds, the business with 80 reviews and professional photos wins every time - regardless of who does better work. The second gap is your website. A website that looks outdated, loads slowly, or doesn't work on a phone sends one message to the customer: this business doesn't take itself seriously. Research by Google found users form aesthetic judgements about websites in as little as 50 milliseconds. If the first impression is poor, they click back to the search results and call your competitor. Your craft doesn't get a chance to speak for itself. The third gap is your review count. Happy customers do not leave reviews unless you ask them to. They mean to. Life gets in the way. Meanwhile, your competitor has a simple system: they text every customer within two hours of completing a job with a direct link to their Google review page. Their review count grows every week. Yours sits at eleven and hasn't moved in eight months. In the customer's mind, those eleven reviews and eighty-seven reviews are not the same thing.

What to Fix First and How Fast It Works

Start with your Google Business Profile. Complete every field: business hours, service areas, services list, and description. Add at least ten photos of real completed work - before and after shots are particularly powerful. Then send a WhatsApp review request to every customer within two hours of finishing a job. A direct link, a brief personal message. That's the entire system. Review count will grow consistently from day one. Fix the website next. If yours is more than three years old, it almost certainly needs to be rebuilt rather than refreshed. A properly built five-page trades website - fast, mobile-first, with a clear click-to-call button and genuine before-and-after photography - will convert significantly more of the traffic Google sends you. The return on investment is immediate. The compounding effect of both changes working together is significant. Better reviews improve your Google rankings. Better rankings send more traffic to your website. A better website converts more of that traffic into calls. Businesses that implement both consistently see meaningful increases in enquiry volume within thirty to sixty days. The phone doesn't stop ringing. That's what being found on Google actually looks like.
